Taming the Laundry Beast

This is my newest project inspired by Candace Wright and her blog about her Laundry Beast.  We have finished most of our basement but the laundry room is the last room that isn't done.  When we are ready to finish it, I will have nice counters and cabinents and it will be beautiful but right now it is unfinished with walls that you can see the electrical wires and the floor is cement. But I have a nice front loading washer and a beautiful dryer that works very well so that is what counts, right!!! Anyway, the old system worked like this: the dirty laundry goes down the laundry chute, I collect it and sort it, wash it and dry it.  Then the clean clothes went into the laundry baskets and brought upstairs where I would fold all the clothes in the living room.  Everyone's piles would sit around my living room, where I would stare at it for about three minutes before I got this strange tick in my face and my body would start to shake as I felt like I couldn't stand the mess any more and then I would take care of everybody's clothes and put them in their drawers!  Then I would look around the now clean living room and sigh a sigh of relief until the next basket came up! And all the kids are smiling saying, "Yay! Mom put my laundry away for me!" Okay, maybe that's not what they said, but subconsciously they were thinking it!  Under my new system: I have these nice new drawers similar to the ones that Candace has (thank you for the idea!!!) that sit right across from my dryer.  The clothes now come out of the dryer and folded and put into the new plastic drawers and each person in the family is responsible for their own clothes!! Awesome!!!! It is no longer in my living room and tucked away downstairs out of my line of sight and now when I hear, "Mom, I'm out of clothes! What can I wear? I say, "Did you check the new plastic drawers!!!" It is so awesome! Freedom!!! But, it is a work in progress. I am working on putting names on each drawer which I will take a picture when I am done. Also, I need a place to hang up the nice shirts and dresses and skirts and I need a place to put my towels and sheets which I have just been stacking on the top of the drawers.  But, one step at a time! I am taming the laundry beast thought and so proud!!!

I wish I had the room to do something like that. Great idea though. Mine was somewhat tame, but I've got to figure out something different. I think mine is going to boil down to only 10 outfits each....at that point the older boys WILL do their own and have their own laundry baskets....for the rest of the family....I will wash and fold, but refuse to put it away....but everyone has their own basket that stays in their rooms to collect the dirty clothes. I use them to sort then once empty they can have back full of clean folded clothes to put away....it's a horrible system, but for this tiny joint and no laundry room that has to work for now. Thanks for the GREAT IDEA!!

Way to go Kari! Right now my laundry piles up in the hall outside the laundry room (it's small)...so don't look down the hall if you come to my house...
